ほらを吹く、という言葉がある。
意味としては「実際よりおおげさに言うこと、まるででたらめな嘘を言うこと」
であるところのこの言葉、現在では広く「法螺を吹く」という字を宛てて使われている。
ほら貝の「法螺」だ。
が、実のところこれは誤用に伴う借字であって、
本来この言葉は「鯔を吹く」と表記するのだ。ボラを吹く。そう魚のボラだ。

つまり、出世魚であるボラのごとく次から次へと
どんどん嘘が大きくなっていくところからして「鯔の大言を吹く」になり、
そこから「鯔を吹く」とこういった具合に派生していったのである。
それがいつの頃からかボラが「ホラ」になってしまい、
法螺の字が宛てられたのだろう。
ほら貝を実際にブオーと吹くことと「おおげさに言うこと」は
どう考えても繋がらないが、これが「鯔を吹く」になればすんなりと説明がつく。
ちょっと聞くと何だか嘘みたいな話だが、その通り、嘘だ。
